ABSTRACT Astemizole is one of the many compounds with antihistaminic activity. It is used in the treatment of patients suffer from allergy. But research is also being carried out for the purpose of using astemizole in the treatment of bedsores and the early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. This drug also appears to be a promising tool in the fight against cancer. The aim of this work was to study some aspects of qualitative chromatographic analysis as well as quantitative densitometric analysis of astemizole in its standard solution. The analysis was carried out on chromatographic plates precoated with silica gel, and a mixture of chloroform and methanol was used as mobile phase. Two methods of chromatographic spot visualization were used i.e. exposure to UV light and also dipping in various solutions of visualizing agents. The spectrodensitometric and densitometric analysis of astemizole were also carried out for the purpose of its quantitative determination. The best visualizing effects were chosen after estimation of the limit of detection for all visualization conditions. It was found that the chromatographic conditions used give the possibility of qualitative and quantitative analysis of astemizole.
