ABSTRACT

This article reviews the mechanism of light-induced vascular reactions (relaxation or contraction) and their possible application to medicine. Several reports have indicated that the UV-induced vascular relaxation may be produced by endothelium-independent nitric oxide generation, which seems to result from a photochemical effect due to photon energy. Such photorelaxation may have a potential application in reducing vasospasm.
