ABSTRACT Hydroxyapatite (HA) with different Ca/P ratios (1.67, 1.62, 1.57 and 1.5) were tested for acid catalyzed esterification of methacrylic acid (MA) with ethylene glycol (EG). The catalyst characterization was done by XRD, FT-IR and TEM to ensure the formation of nano sized particles with desired Ca/P ratio. The reaction products were separated by column chromatography, and product identification was done with 1H-NMR and FT-IR. It was observed that hydroxyapatite with Ca/P ratio of 1.5 shows higher activity during esterification reaction, and the reaction was found to be first order with respect to acid. During the present study, addition of hydroquinone was not required to prevent polymerization, which confirms the presence of mild acidic sites on non-stoichiometric HA catalyst.
