ABSTRACT

Driven by modern applications of transport  phenomena in porous media, some of which  involving rotation provides the motivation for reviewing the topic of convection in rotating porous media. The theory of convection in rotating porous layers is therefore critically reviewed based on the principles and fundamentals of rotating fluid mechanics in porous media. Aspects of free convection driven by centrifugal buoyancy in combination with or without gravity forces as well as the Coriolis effect resulting from the rotation are discussed. Examples of solutions to a sample of related problems are provided. These theoretical results form the basis for further development required to apply the underlying principles to particular applications such as solidification of binary alloys, rotating machinery and others.
