ABSTRACT

This review focuses on the use of metallophthalocyanine (MPc) as electrocatalysts for the detection of nitric oxide, nitrite and nitrate. The use of MPc complexes as both heterogeneous and homogeneous electrocatalysts is discussed. Methods of electrode modification using MPc complexes are presented. MPc complex containing electroactive central metal (such as CoPc and FePc) show good catalytic activity towards the detection of NO, nitrite and nitrate. Changes in the oxidation state of the central metal mediate the catalytic processes. CuPc and NiPc do not show redox activity at the central metal but have often also shown catalytic activity, hence ring based redox process may be involved in the catalytic processes in some situations.
