ABSTRACT
 
The review summarizes the results of current studies on the bioaccumulation and determination of rhenium in green plants. Rhenium is freely accumulated in green vegetation (leaves of various trees, grass, geranium, algae, etc). A number of new highly sensitive and reliable methods developed by us for determination of rhenium in plants were applied to the study of rhenium bio-accumulation processes. Rhenium was established to be preferably accumulated in the green parts of all kind of plants in concentrations exceeding many times its occurrence in the earth’s crust (7x10-8 %). The different plants have different capacities for rhenium accumulation. The dynamics and extent of rhenium accumulation in geranium (Pelargonium) leaves was studied on soils spiked with KReO4 solution as well as on pure KReO4 solutions. The amount of accumulated rhenium in geranium leaves was found to depend on both exposure time and concentration of rhenium in the solution. The formation of steady rhenium organic compounds in plants was not established by chromatography. It is very likely that rhenium is present in the leaf cell as perrhenate ions. Our studies on the extraction of rhenium from plants show that rhenium is completely extracted from plant ash by alkaline solutions and from fresh leaves by ethanol and solutions of KNO3, NaCl, HCl and HNO3. The bioaccumulation of rhenium in plants may be applied to biogeochemical indication of new rhenium-containing deposits and used for extraction of rhenium from soils and waters.
