ABSTRACT
 
Serotonin is one of several monoamine neurotransmitters which has been detected in early invertebrate and vertebrate embryos prior to the development of a nervous system. A growing number of investigations suggest that in these embryos serotonin plays a regulatory role in cleavage, gastrulation, neurulation, organogenesis and cell differentiation.
